Peg Gray-Vickrey was elected to serve as President of the center’s Board of Trustees for 2009/2010. She also served as President of the Board for 2007 - 2009. She has been a member of the Board since 2002. She previously served as Vice President of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Advisory Board. Gray-Vickrey is an Associate Vice President of Curriculum and Instruction and a professor of nursing at Florida Gulf Coast University. She received her doctorate in nursing science from the University of Buffalo, her master of science in gerontological nursing from Northern Illinois University, and her bachelor of science in nursing from State University of New York at Plattsburgh. She is a licensed registered nurse in the State of Florida. She serves on the editorial review board for Nursing 2007 and the editorial review panel for Geriatric Nursing. She is Editor of Alzheimer’s Care Today. She has received numerous honors and awards, including Professor of the Year 1999 at FGCU and the Emeritus Award for Research in the Field of Aging 1991 at University of Buffalo.
Albert (Al) O’Donnell was elected to serve as Vice President of the center’s Board of Trustees for 2009/2010. He has served on the Board since 2005. He is the president of O’Donnell Landscapes in Estero. O’Donnell earned his bachelor’s degree at Fordham University. He and his family moved to southwest Florida in 1976. He is past president/director of the Estero Chamber of Commerce, member of Estero Design Review Committee, Lee County Landscape Advisory committee, and the Citizens Advisory Committee for Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization.
Lou Pontius was elected to serve as Secretary of the center’s Board of Trustees for 2009/2010. She has served on the Board since 1998 and has held the offices of vice president, secretary and treasurer in previous years. Pontius is a dedicated community volunteer. Her outstanding volunteerism and commitment to our community has been recognized by many organizations. She was the recipient of the Red Cross Clara Barton Award and Junior League Community Award. She and her husband Steve also received the honor of the Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award and Gulfshore Life Man/Woman of the Year Award. She received her bachelor degree in math from Texas Christian University and later taught high school math prior to dedicating herself to community volunteerism. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and boating.
Britton G. Swank was elected to serve as Treasurer of the center’s Board of Trustees for 2009/2010. She is serving her third year in this office. She has served on the Board since 2004 and previously held the office of secretary. Swank is an elder law attorney with Osterhout, McKinney, & Prather. She received her juris doctorate as well as her bachelor of science in telecommunications from the University of Florida. She enjoys scuba diving, water skiing, snow skiing, and jogging.
Kathy Shimp served as President of the center’s Board of Trustees from 2005 – 2007 and previously held the office of treasurer. She is currently Past President of the Board. Shimp has served on the Board since 1998. She is a dedicated community volunteer. She is a graduate of Denison University where she majored in Spanish. Kathy and her husband Steve have resided in Ft. Myers for 25 years. She has two adult children and two granddaughters. She enjoys tennis, golf, boating, fishing, and spending time with her granddaughters.
John Belisle was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1998. He has served on the center’s executive committee in the position of Vice President. Belisle is senior vice president for Oswald Trippe and Company. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Rhode Island.
Stan Grigiski was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2004. Previously, he served on the center’s Advisory Board. He was an active member of the center’s special events committee prior to and during his Board service. Grigiski holds a bachelor’s degree in business. He joined Medical Claim Service of Southwest Florida, Inc. in 1990 and received his license with the state of Florida as a Public Health Adjuster shortly thereafter. He acquired ownership of the Company in October 1997. In November of 2000 he became a Certified Claims Assistance Professional through the Alliance of Claims Assistance Professional Inc. Stan is actively involved in serving the community by presenting seminars to Medicare beneficiaries educating them on Medicare and other insurance issues. In the past, he has used his knowledge in the field by conducting an adult education course entitled “Medicare & You” at Edison Community College. He enjoys photography as well as coaching youth softball and baseball teams.
Archie B. Hayward, Jr. has served on the Board since 1998 and has held the offices of president, past president, vice president, and secretary. Hayward was appointed to the bench as Lee County Court Judge by Governor Crist in 2008. He previously was employed as then senior project leader and managing attorney with Florida Rural Legal Services. He received his juris doctorate and Bachelor of Arts from University of Florida. He is a Ft. Myers native and attended Edison College where he earned an associate of arts degree. He is a member of the Downtown Ft. Myers Rotary Club and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Southwest Florida Community Foundation. He enjoys working out, kayaking, rowing, and biking.
Jill Jamieson was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2007. She is a managing partner of Global Growth Partners, and international development and economic consulting firm. Jamieson earned her Master of Arts degree in international law and diplomacy from Harvard University and her Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University. She is a 2006 winner of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, gold level for over 500 hours of service in a calendar year. She also received multiple awards for service to the American Red Cross, particularly for her work with Hispanic outreach and Hurricane Katrina relief. She was awarded the Government Service Award in Costa Rica. Jamieson is fluent in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. She is the author of the cookbook, Dishing Politics, as well as multiple academic publications. Proceeds from her cookbook sales are donated to Alzheimer’s-related charitable organizations including the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center.
Keith Kyle was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2006. Kyle is a circuit court judge with the 20th Judicial Circuit. He earned his juris doctorate at Florida State University and his bachelor’s degree from Emory University. He graduated cum laude from FSU’s college of law in 1996. He enjoys golf, travel, and spending time with family and friends.
James (Jim) Nolte was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1997. He is a certified financial planner and is employed as a financial consultant with Wells Fargo Advisors. Nolte earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. His hobbies include boating, golf, scuba diving, and travel.
Carol Osterhout Carol Osterhout was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2008. Osterhout is Senior Vice President and Private Banking Manager for Colonial Bank. She attended Edison College and University of South Florida and started her banking career in 1980. Osterhout moved to Lee County from Germany in 1972. She enjoys volunteer opportunities as a sustaining member of the Junior League of Ft. Myers, executive member of the Heart Ball for Lee County Heart Association, and United Way Allocations team member.
Steven (Steve) Personette was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1998. Personette is the manager of public affairs for Embarq. He attended Indiana State University and Edison Community College. He has over 30 years experience working in the telephone industry. Personette is an active community volunteer. He has serviced as chair for the Board of Hope Hospice, Rotary Club of Cape Coral, North Ft. Myers Chamber of Commerce, Golden Apple Awards, and Junior Achievement of Lee County. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Cape Coral Community Foundation and Advisory Boards of Habitat for Humanity and Salvation Army.
Jamie Seneca was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2005 at which time she served as a chair of the center’s Advisory Board. She joined the center as an advocate for raising awareness and special events. She was an active member of the center’s special events committee prior to and during Board service, with special interest in the center’s annual gala event. Seneca is employed by GE Medical as a sales consultant for durable medical equipment. She has a background in marketing and has worked in marketing positions in the healthcare field. Seneca earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts studies and health care administration from California State University Hayward. She is a recipient of the American Allegiance Award. She enjoys spending time with her husband and three young children. Her hobbies include outdoor activities including waterskiing, backpacking, rock climbing, and traveling. Doug Waldorf Doug Waldorf was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2009. He previously served one term on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of the Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center. Waldorf is a Florida Bar Board Certified Real Estate Lawyer whose practice focuses on banking industry clients. He represents lenders in commercial and residential loan transactions, as well as in mortgage foreclosures, deeds in lieu of foreclosure, forbearance agreements and other matters related to defaulted loan workouts. Prior to joining Henderson Franklin in August of 2003, he served for nearly twelve years as Vice President and Corporate Legal Counsel for SunTrust Bank in Lee and Collier counties.
Nancy Zant was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1996. Zant holds a bachelor’s degree in management and has many years experience working in the nursing home industry. She earned her masters degree in health science with an education concentration from FGCU. Zant is a gerontologist and licensed nursing home administrator. She is employed by Lee Memorial Health System as the administrator of HealthPark Care Center. She is also adjunct faculty for FGCU.
ADVISORY BOARD
Norma Hand Brill was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2004. She also served a two-year term on the Advisory Board beginning in 1998. Brill is a certified elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation and by the Florida Bar. She earned her juris doctorate from St. Mary’s University College of Law. She is licensed to practice in Florida, Texas and Colorado, and is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys. Brill is a member of the Rotary Club of North Fort Myers, and is a past president of that organization. She has been selected as a Super Lawyer for 2007, 2008 and 2009 by Super Lawyers Magazine.
Janette L’Heureux was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2008. She is employed by Leading Edge Financial Group. L’Heureux received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Personnel Management from the University of Wisconsin in 1984. She received her Registered Health Underwriter certification in 1999 and her Registered Employee Benefit Consultant certification from the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 2006. She is an active member of the Human Resource Management Association, Health Management Association, National Health Underwriters, and Greater Fort Myers Chamber. L'Heureux is a past board member of Meals on Wheels Lee County and Past President of the organization. She is also a strong supporter of the United Way, The American Cancer Society and the Stay Alive/Just Drive Program.
Tracy Lima was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2008. With a strong 25-year career in trust banking, Tracy Lima opened her own company, Trusted Financial Services in 2006. Trusted Financial Services provides personal financial and fiduciary services, primarily to seniors. Tracy is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)®. Certified Senior Advisors (CSA)® are professionals who have supplemented their individual professional licenses, credentials and education with special training to understand the key health, social, and financial factors that are important to seniors. Tracy co-founded the Giving Alliance of Women, a component of the Cape Coral Community Foundation. Tracy serves as chairperson of the Planned Giving Committee for the Lee County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Tracy is a current member and past President of the Estate Planning Council of Lee County. She has also served on the Boards of Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Gulf Coast Opera Company, and Cape Coral Community Foundation, and has volunteered for Hope Hospice and the Boy Scouts of America. Tracy is the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, a leadership award from the National Council of Boy Scouts of America. Tracy sings in the choir and is a Stephen Minister at her church. Tracy enjoys using her knowledge of local agencies and services to improve the quality of life for individuals in the community.
Jim McLaughlin was appointed to the Advisory board in 2007. He is the owner/photographer of Photography by Jim McLaughlin. McLaughlin earned his bachelor’s degree in modern languages (Spanish) from St. Bonaventure University and a diploma of Honor form the University of Madrid, Spain. He is the recipient of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle Award for more than 25 years services in the TV news business and was awarded various news-related awards for series and documentaries. He covered major news stories for WINK TV including an interview with former President George Bush on the back of a train rolling through the Wisconsin country-side., two Republican National Conventions, and a flight into Hurricane David aboard a NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane. He enjoys gourmet cooking and RV travels.
Pam Pence was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2007. She is serving as Vice Chair of the Advisory Board for 2009/2010. Pence is the marketing director for Arden Courts Alzheimer’s Assisted Living. She earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Cincinnati. She enjoys shell collecting, horseback riding, and youth ministry.
Shirley Ruder was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2005. She served as Vice Chair for one term. Ruder is an assistant professor of nursing at Florida Gulf Coast University. She is a licensed registered nurse and holds a doctor of education from Northern Illinois University. She earned her master of science in oncology nursing from Loyola University and her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She has over 25 years teaching experience at the diploma, associate degree, and bachelor degree level. She joined FGCU’s school of nursing in 2002. She is actively involved in developing web based courses and is a frequent presenter at local and national conferences on aspects of teaching and end of life issues. Ruder serves as the chair of the Southwest Florida Coalition Improving End of Life Care. She was nominated for the Junior Faculty Scholarship Award in 2007 and was awarded the Faculty Team Service Excellence Award in 2007.
Frederick Schaerf was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2005. He previously served on the Board in the early years of the center’s operation and was Chair of the Advisory Board for 2007/2008. Schaerf is a neuropsychiatrist in private practice and is the principal investigator for Neuropsychiatric Research Center of Southwest Florida. Schaerf received his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland. He completed his post graduate training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Baltimore City Hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland. He has held local positions at Lee Memorial Hospital and Ruth Cooper Center for Behavioral Health. He is a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is Board Certified in Forensic Psychiatry. He served in the Army National Guard for 10 years. Schaerf has written over 25 published articles and15 abstracts. He has been the sub-investigator and principal investigator in over 100 research studies, including medication for Alzheimer’s disease.
Michael Skaggs was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2005. He is serving as Chair of the Advisory Board for 2009/2010 and in that role also has the responsibility of serving on the Board of Trustees. Skaggs is a licensed nursing home administrator and is employed by Heartland Health Care Center. He has many years experience in long term care administration and formerly owned and operated private assisted living facilities for Alzheimer’s and dementia care in Ft. Myers and Cape Coral.
Halcyon St. Hill was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2009. St. Hill is a Professor, Faculty Senate President and a member of the Board of Trustees of Florida Gulf Coast University. St. Hill holds a doctorate from Rutgers University and a Master of Science in Microbiology from the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University. She received a B.S. Health Sciences, with a major in Clinical Laboratory Science from Hunter College. St. Hill started at FGCU in 1996 as Associate Professor and the Assistant Dean for the College of Health Professions and Founding Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies - Health Sciences Programs. She is well known for her work in her areas of expertise through her scholarship and leadership in the professional arena as well as service to her community. Her many intellectual contributions are peer reviewed or by invitation. They include articles, book chapters, model curriculum and regional, national and international presentations of her work in prestigious arenas including Oxford University in the UK. She has been active in several national organizations over the years including the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) during which she served on the Geriatric Education Committee. Currently, St. Hill serves as an advisor on the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CSLI), Chair for the Generalist and Public Health Scientific Assembly for the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and is the Scholarship Chair and Treasurer for Florida Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
John Thorp was appointed to the Advisory Board in 2005 and served as Chair for one term. He is the program and sales manager for Lee Memorial Health System’s Post Acute Services. Thorp holds masters degrees in health care administration and business administration as well as bachelor’s degrees in marketing and economics. He is involved in youth activities, and he participates and coaches a variety of athletics.
